TITLE Complications of Childbearing

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

DEPARTMENT Midwifery

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is targeted for third year midwifery students. It is purposely designed to follow previous study-units where these students would have learnt about the normality of pregnancy, labour and birth and the puerperium. Such knowledge will help the students to understand deviations from normality which will be explored in this study-unit which focuses on various diseases/conditions which are known to complicate pregnancy, others which are associated with complications during labour and birth and also problems relating to complications of the puerperium.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To develop the students' competence (knowledge, skills and attitudes) on various complications which can occur during pregnancy, labour and the puerperium; and
- To develop the students' awareness on the importance of reducing risks for mother and baby when complications in childbearing arise, through appropriate midwifery care in collaboration with the obstetric team.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognise deviation from the norm in childbearing and respond effectively by providing appropriate midwifery care;
- Demonstrate knowledge of various conditions complicating childbearing; and
- Describe the most appropriate midwifery management in various situations which complicate childbearing, including emergency situations.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify deviations from normal childbearing; and
- Diagnose, plan and implement care for women presenting with complications during the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period in collaboration with the multidisciplinary obstetric team.
