DESCRIPTION This unit is designed for third-year midwifery students and aims to provide them with a comprehensive understanding of various skills needed to manage a number of complications which may occur during childbirth. It incorporates a blend of lectures and hands-on practice sessions held within a simulated clinical setting, with a focus on equiping students with the clinical proficiency to handle a range of scenarios. Students will gain practical experience in initiating appropriate emergency interventions within the scope of their professional responsibilities, focusing on critical situations such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia and breech presentation.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is for students to gain comprehensive knowledge to enable them to recognise emergency complications of pregnancy/childbirth and to initiate appropriate measures to achieve a favourable outcome.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify women and babies in need of emergency measures;
- Discuss the appropriate means of communication to call for assistance;
- Initiate appropriate emergency measures to manage childbearing-related complications within the student's scope of professional practice;
- Monitor the condition of the woman/fetus where appropriate;
- Record information following the event; and
- Communicate with the women and relatives during and following the event.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognise women in need of emergency treatment
- Communicate skillfully with collegues, women and their families;
- Initiate appropriate measures to achieve a safe outcome in critical situations such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia and breech presentation;
- Perform record keeping contemporaneously;
- Monitor the condition of the mother and neonate
