DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to develop the students' knowledge to contemporary issues in infant-feeding, at birth and subsequently in the first year of life. It includes discussions around both natural and artificial methods of feeding the baby, with a predominate focus on breastfeeding. It also provides an exploration of infant feeding methods in the preterm baby. Students will also become aware of the issues and practice around the introduction of solid foods to a baby.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- Provide students with the latest evidence related to infant feeding in the first year of life;
- Develop students' knowledge of the nutritional needs in relation to growth and development in the baby;
- Encourage students' to explore the issues around the choice of an infant feeding method and the challenges and practices of both breastfeeding and artificial feeding;
- Develop students' awareness infant feeding practices for preterm infants;
- Develop students' understanding of current evidence relating to weaning the infants.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate adequate knowledge about the physiology and management of infant feeding, in both breastfeeding and formula feeding;
- Demonstrate an understanding of providing an infant's nutritional needs relating to its growth and development;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the various factors influencing the choice of infant feeding method adopted;
- Develop adequate knowledge of the evidence relating to weaning the infants.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the midwife's role in providing infant feeding advice according to the latest evidence;
- Identify the midwife's role in supporting new mothers to feed their newborn according to their preferred choice of infant feeding method.
