DESCRIPTION | This is a practical study-unit that further builds on the basic principal techniques and exposes the student to a range of practical experiments from different disciplines. Students will have a 3鈥恏our practical session per week. During each session, students are taught different laboratory techniques, which are also explained in detail. At the end of the session students are expected to write a lab report discussing the tests carried out and the results obtained. The practical list consists of: - Basic Cell Pathology Techniques: Microtomy; - Basic Cell Pathology Techniques: The Role of Cytology in Cancer Diagnosis; - Basic Cell Pathology Techniques: Microscopy and Basic cell morphology; - Basic Cell Pathology Techniques: Papanicolau Staining; - Basic Transfusion Science: Blood Groups; - Basic Transfusion Science: Compatibility testing; - Preparing Haemolysates; - Preparing Blood Smears; - Bacterial Growth Curves; - Using a Haemocytometer; - Handling Patient Data and SOP. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the basic principles underlying each of these techniques; - Accurately follow a protocol to carry out these tests; - List the limitations of each technique; and - Critically appraise the results of the above tests and discuss their significance.
