DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the role of the pathology laboratories in the diagnosis and clinical management of some of the most common respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine and gynaecological diseases.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are:
- To interpret the rationale of laboratory tests, mainly histopathological, cytologicaly and biochemical tests, in the investigation of common pathological conditions;
- To relate the problems encountered in laboratory processing that affect test results; and
- To understand the significance of test results to the patient.

- Testicular and Prostatic Cancer;

- CNS Disease;
- Lymphoid Disease;

- Tumour Markers;
- Cancer Screening.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define the terms biopsy and resection (or excision) specimens;
- Describe the different types of biopsy and resection specimens that can be obtained for investigation of a particular organ system, and their application;
- Describe the different types of cytology specimens that can be obtained for investigation of a particular organ system, and their application;
- Discuss the importance of the gross features of a resection specimen;
- Discuss the importance of the microscopic features, in terms of reaching a correct diagnosis, obtaining grade and stage of tumours and prognosis of tumours;
- Identify when and why special stains / IHC / other tests may be required;
- Interpret a simple histopathology, cytology, biochemistry laboratory report;
- Explain the problems in obtaining specimen material for clinical diagnosis;
- State the problems encountered in laboratory processing that affect test results; and
- Appraise the role of screening programmes.
