| DESCRIPTION | The aim of this study鈥恥nit is for students to acquire a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of Internal Quality Control and External Quality Assessment in hospital clinical laboratories. Content: 鈥� Total Quality Management 鈥� Quality Assurance 鈥� Quality Control 鈥� External Quality Assessment 鈥� QA and QC Special Problems 鈥� Selection and Evaluation of Methods 鈥� Reference Values 鈥� Documentation 鈥� Learning Outcomes By the end of the study-unit, students should be able to: 鈥� Distinguish clearly between the aims of Internal Quality Control and External Quality Assessment; 鈥� Identify when a clinical assay is either out of control or approaching an out of control situation and remedy such identified problems; 鈥� Implement a full laboratory quality programme; 鈥� Identify the characteristics of effective evaluation processes and factors that are more likely to impede successful implementation of an evaluation; 鈥� Define the reporting requirements of an effective evaluation process; and 鈥� Describe the relationships between programme evaluation and quality assurance.
