DESCRIPTION | The aim of this study鈥恥nit is for students to acquire a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of Internal Quality Control and External Quality Assessment in hospital clinical laboratories. Content: 鈥 Total Quality Management 鈥 Quality Assurance 鈥 Quality Control 鈥 External Quality Assessment 鈥 QA and QC Special Problems 鈥 Selection and Evaluation of Methods 鈥 Reference Values 鈥 Documentation 鈥 Learning Outcomes By the end of the study-unit, students should be able to: 鈥 Distinguish clearly between the aims of Internal Quality Control and External Quality Assessment; 鈥 Identify when a clinical assay is either out of control or approaching an out of control situation and remedy such identified problems; 鈥 Implement a full laboratory quality programme; 鈥 Identify the characteristics of effective evaluation processes and factors that are more likely to impede successful implementation of an evaluation; 鈥 Define the reporting requirements of an effective evaluation process; and 鈥 Describe the relationships between programme evaluation and quality assurance.
