| DESCRIPTION | This is a taught study-unit. During each session a different aspect of Laboratory Management is tackled. Students are expected to do group work during lecture time on different topics as directed by the moderator. Assessment of the lab management part of the module will be based on various aspects related to laboratory management. This study-unit is intended to create awareness in the student as to how a medical laboratory is organised and managed, but it is not intended to create laboratory managers. The first part of the study-unit addresses the basic fundamentals of managerial practice in the laboratory setting. The managerial functions of planning, organising and controlling are introduced. The second part deals with laboratory technical management - managerial activities specific to medical laboratories. The second part builds on the knowledge acquired in the first part and covers more advanced topics in laboratory technical management, including financial issues. The ethics component of this study-unit introduces students to the concepts and principles of ethics. Learning Outcomes (Ethics) By the end of this study-unit, students should be able to: 鈥� Discuss ethical cases using ethical principles; 鈥� Ensure a sound ethical dimension to all cases in health care; acknowledging that each case has its ethical component; 鈥� Practice and impart a proper informed consent process; 鈥� Define and stop negligence and malpractice; 鈥� Describe the principle of invoking double effect; 鈥� Distinguish between utilitarian approaches to health care, and, deontological approaches; and 鈥� Recognize what is meant by respecting the rights of patients.
