Study-Unit Description

CODE MLS4007

TITLE Applied Cellular Pathology

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Applied Biomedical Science

DESCRIPTION This study-unit deals with detailed knowledge on some specialised topics within the areas of Histopathology and Cytopathology, mainly autopsies, fluorescent in situ hybridisation, immunohistochemistry, cancer screening, quality control, borderline smears, national screening programmes and cytological diagnosis of specific problem areas.

Students are expected to read and research further the topics presented in lectures and to present an assignment on his/her choice within the specialised area.

Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is for students to study in depth selected specialised techniques, within the areas of Histopathology and Cytopathology, and to discuss their application in clinical practice.

Content:

鈥 The Role of the Autopsy
鈥 Safety Issues in the Histopathology Labs and Mortuary
鈥 Quality Assurance in Histopathology
鈥 Quality Assurance in Immunohistochemistry
鈥 Skin Immunoflourescence
鈥 The FISH Technique
鈥 The significance of the borderline smear
鈥 Diagnosis of mesothelioma
鈥 The role of HPV DNA testing
鈥 National Screening Programmes.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the study鈥恥nit the student should be able to:
鈥 Explain the basic autopsy procedure and outline the specialized techniques;
鈥 Discuss the role of the autopsy, differentiating between hospital and forensic autopsies;
鈥 Describe the practical application of immunohistochemical techniques in histopathology and cytology;
鈥 Outline the techniques and rationale of HPV DNA testing;
鈥 Assess the use and objectives of HPV DNA testing;
鈥 Discuss the use of the autopsy for audit purposes;
鈥 Appraise the health and safety issues in the mortuary;
鈥 Critically appraise the laboratory techniques employed in cellular pathology including direct immunofluorescene and FISH techniques;
鈥 Understand the basis of national screening programmes;
鈥 Discuss the features of borderline smears and the significance to patient management;
鈥 Discuss the problems in reaching a diagnosis of mesothelioma in cytology.
