DESCRIPTION Wear and corrosion processes cost countries around the world millions of Euros and often numerous human lives. This study-unit aims at increasing the student's awareness of the various mechanisms leading to material degradation and risk associated with it. Design considerations and various ways of preventing or controlling mechanisms leading to material degradation are also studied.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit has two main objectives. The first is to show how seemingly insignificant details in engineering design / process design / operating procedures can lead to accelerated degradation of goods, equipment, machines, and property. The second objective is to introduce the students to a selected number of material degradation processes such that through understanding the student will be in a better position to limit or avoid their onset by introducing intelligent measures at the design stage.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- explain the basic concepts of electrochemical corrosion;
- explain the various conditions leading to localized accelerated corrosion;
- describe the philosophy of material and process selection to minimise wear and corrosion;
- recognise and manage the risk associated with material degradation outcomes by assessing their impact on safety and performance.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- point out the most common corrosion mechanisms from their tell tail symptoms;
- select the most appropriate approach to tackle simple degradation problems;
- take appropriate and intelligent measures during the design stage to minimise corrosion and wear;
- predict the function of corrosion inhibitors.
