DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is undertaken during semester 2 with specific time being allocated to clinical placements. Each student will be placed in a particular clinical area relevant to their course of studies and be placed under the supervision of a named mentor. A series of competencies will guide the student through the work that they are required to do and, working with their mentor, they will develop an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, skill development and the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice. Students will not be expected to function as 'qualified staff' but will learn the professional and personal skills under guidance and supervision from both mentors and academic supervisors in an incremental fashion, with each practice study-unit building on the last. Study-Unit Aims: This introductory and consecutive study-units will allow the student to experience working within a mental health care environment and begin the process of both professional and personal skills development. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the practicalities of working within a mental health care setting; - Appreciate the work of the multi-disciplinary team and the place of nursing within it; - Have a better understanding of the relationship factors that both enable and inhibit the professional relationship between patient and nurse; and - Describe their own strengths and weaknesses within the interpersonal domain of mental health nursing. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Relate the theoretical constructs from ancillary study-units to clinical practice activities; - Identify behavioural cues, through observational skills, to enable them to be able to provide patient information to other members of the nursing team; - Undertake a patient assessment; and - Successfully complete the mental health nursing competencies associated with this study-unit.
