DESCRIPTION This study-unit is the first in a series of progressive modules that will introduce mental health nursing students to the clinical skills essential for psychiatric and mental health nursing practice. The study-unit will focus on the key principles of building a therapeutic relationship while effectively performing basic competencies and skills within a person-centered approach to psychiatric and mental health care. It is designed to help students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical clinical skills, empowering them to make informed and effective clinical decisions in the field of psychiatry and mental health. The learning experience integrates theoretical and practical lectures to provide a comprehensive and diverse approach to education in mental health nursing.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to build a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge related to a range of practical mental health nursing skills, based on the latest evidence. Students will learn to implement these skills safely in a simulated clinical environment, under the supervision of a trained psychitric and mental health nursing instructors, and apply their theoretical understanding to the delivery of care within complex mental health situations. Students will also develop the ability to critically reflect on their performance of these skills and consider how they translate into real-world clinical practice within the field of mental health.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate a range of psychiatric and mental health nursing clinical skills and their relevant theoretical background in a supervised simulated environment;
- Discuss with tutors and instructors the theoretical background supporting the relevant practical psychiatric and mental health nursing skills;
- Evaluate and Implement feedback from practical workshops;
- Apply a person-centred approach and client safety in the provision of care.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Communicate effectively and demonstrate the ability to conduct a therapeutic conversation with clients having a mental health condition;
- Assess for client’s changes in mood, thought content, affect, behaviour, communication and speech;
- Measure and record height, weight, Blood Pressure, Pulse, Temperature, SpO2, Respirations including appropriate documentation, charts and awareness of normal and abnormal ranges;
- Analyse information related to a client’s medical history and presenting parameters including but not limited to Blood Pressure, Pulse, Respiration, Blood Investigations, Drug and Pregnancy Screening;
- Differentiate between the medical diagnosis and the psychiatric diagnosis yet address them holistically;
- Describe the admission process;
- Infection control and handling of sharps;
- Supporting clients with basic ADL’s and occupational skills;
- Demonstrate knowledge of co-morbid medical conditions commonly associated with mental health issues, such as, diabetes, coronary artery disease, asthma, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia.
