DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is the second in a series of progressive modules that will introduce mental health nursing students to the clinical skills essential for psychiatric and mental health nursing practice. The study-unit will focus on strenghtening the therapeutic relationship while effectively performing more advanced competencies and skills within a person-centered approach to psychiatric and mental health care. It is designed to help students develop more theoretical knowledge and practical clinical skills, empowering them to make informed and effective clinical decisions in the field of psychiatry and mental health. The learning experience integrates theoretical and practical lectures to provide a comprehensive and diverse approach to education in mental health nursing. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to streghten the foundation of theoretical knowledge related to practical mental health nursing skills, based on the latest evidence. Students will continue to develop skills safely in a simulated clinical enviroment, under the supervision of trained psychitric and mental health nursing instructors, and apply their theorectocal understaning to comples mental health scenarios. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate knowledge preperation, handling and administration of psychotropic drugs, including their side effects; - Demonstrate knowledge about the dangerous drug act, the psychotropic drugs listed under this Act (including dosages) and the DDA protocol; - Communicate effetively within the multi-discplinary team and complete the necessary documentation; - Demonstrate competence in safe client handling. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Administer and record medications including but not limited to oral, ear, eye, topical, rectal vaginal, sub-cutaneous and intramuscular medication; - Prepare, monitor and care for a client prior to, during and after an ECT/TMS including the necessary documentation and consent; - Administer and demonstrate knowledge on oxygen therapy; - Monitor of clients during seclusion and/or raised level of supervision including an understanding of related documents; - Identify and measure specific psychiatric symptoms using psychometric rating scales including but not limited to Beck’s Depression Inventory, Broset Violence Checklist, GAD-7, Mood Disorder Questionnaire, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Drug Use Questionnaire, SQUARE, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression; - Recognise signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) and lithium toxici; - Assist clients in ambulation and client handling; - Demonstrate knowledge in psychiatric and mental health documentation including handover skills between the parties (members of the MDT).
