DESCRIPTION | The study-unit covers ethical values in relation to mental health nursing. It addresses ethics as a personal construct - values and beliefs; the provision of mental health care within an interrelated, culturally diverse, environment; the ethics of the caring relationship; codes and declarations, making ethical decisions, ethical dilemmas; confidentiality, respect, trustworthiness, maintaining competence, patient safety and compliance, Mental Health Act, EU Human Rights legislation, consent to treatment and their implications for practice. Study-Unit Aims: - To equip the student to provide high-quality, ethical care that meets legal and clinical standards in Mental Health; - To ensure the student has the knowledge to practice legally, ethically, and respectfully while providing the highest standard of care within the different mental health areas. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Recognize the main principles of ethical practice in mental health nursing; - Explain how human rights laws apply to mental health care delivery; - Identify clinical situations where ethical issues can create vulnerability for both nurses and patients. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Practice in a way that complies with legal requirements in different mental health settings; - Act ethically and responsibly within the mental health care environment; - Show respect and uphold the dignity of patients in both direct care and advocacy.
