DESCRIPTION | This study-unit equips mental health nursing students with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage and coordinate mental health services. It focuses on leadership, resource management, and policy implementation, enabling students to improve the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of mental health care. Students will gain an understanding of healthcare structures, legal and ethical considerations, and quality improvement processes. They will also develop practical skills in team management, decision-making, and strategic planning, preparing them to lead multidisciplinary teams and advocate for patient-centred mental health care within complex healthcare environments. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for mental health nurses to manage, coordinate, and improve mental health services effectively. It focuses on administrative, leadership, and policy-making aspects of healthcare, enabling nurses to provide high-quality, efficient, and patient-centred care within a multidisciplinary framework. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss health service structures and policies related to mental health care; - Discuss principles of resource management, including budgeting, staffing, and workflow optimization; - Demonstrate insight into leadership theories and their application in mental health settings; - Show awareness of legal, ethical, and professional guidelines in health service management; - Exhibit familiarity with quality improvement processes and performance evaluation in mental health services. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Communicate effectively and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams; - Engage in effective decision-making and problem-solving in resource allocation and service delivery; - Demonstrate leadership and team management, including conflict resolution and motivation; - Engage in strategic planning and implementation of mental health policies and reforms.
