DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to provide psychiatric nursing students with essential skills in managing challenging situations and delivering high-quality physical care. The first component of the unit focuses on de-escalation techniques, equipping students with strategies to manage and diffuse situations involving agitated or distressed patients. Students will learn how to assess and respond to escalating behaviors in a calm and professional manner, ensuring both patient and staff well-being. In the second component of the study-unit covers students will develop the practical knowledge and skills necessary for assessing, cleaning, dressing, and managing wounds, with a focus on preventing infection and promoting healing. Special consideration will be given to the challenges unique to psychiatric patients, including self-harm, non-compliance, and the impact of psychiatric conditions on the healing process. Students will also explore patient education, documentation, and the importance of a holistic, patient-centered approach to wound care. This study-unit will combine theoretical lectures, case studies, and practical workshops to ensure students are equipped with both the knowledge and hands-on experience required to apply these critical skills in real-world psychiatric settings. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to equip psychiatric and mental health nursing students with the essential skills required for managing challenging situations and providing high-quality physical care. The study-unit focuses on two critical areas of psychiatric nursing practice, De-escalation Techniques and Wound Care. The study-unit will also explore the relationship between mental health and wound healing, emphasizing the importance of holistic care. By the end of the study-unit, students will be prepared to apply de-escalation strategies and provide effective wound care, ensuring safe and compassionate practice in psychiatric nursing settings Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate Competency in De-escalation Techniques; - Understand the Principles of Wound Care and integrate wound care management with Mental Health Considerations in both a psychiatric in-patient and community setting; - Promote Patient Education and Self-Care related to wound care. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Demonstrate Competency in De-escalation Techniques: - Identify signs of escalating behaviour and apply appropriate de-escalation strategies to manage patients in distress; - Utilize verbal and non-verbal communication techniques effectively to reduce tension and maintain a calm, therapeutic environment; - Practice active listening, empathy, and conflict resolution skills in managing challenging situations with patients; - Ensure patient and staff safety during high-stress situations while maintaining a non-confrontational approach. Understand the Principles of Wound Care: - Describe the key principles of wound assessment, including types of wounds, stages of healing, and potential complications; - Apply appropriate wound care techniques, including cleaning, dressing, and infection prevention, in a clinical setting.
