DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to allow the student the opportunity to implement theoretical knowledge within the acute mental health clinical setting. All knowledge development in this unit is gained by engaging in clinical practice under supervision of ward nurses. Students are expected to complete 60 hours of clinical placements in which they are to practice competencies as outlined within the Acute Mental Health Nursing Student handbook. Students must be able to develop their own learning contract with the unit coordinator and show implementation of both evidence based practice and theoretical materials developed during both the formal teaching and independent study sessions. Experiential development is gauged via a portfolio of work and a clinical assessment. Study-Unit Aims: To provide the student the opportunity to work with patients suffering an acute episode of their mental illness and explore the use of clinical and personal interventions to increase their effectiveness with this patient group. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply the concepts of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation to the clinical settings; - Reflect on their own performance in relation to their professional competencies; - Identify barriers limiting effective communication, trust and therapeutic engagement 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate the ability to conduct a therapeutic conversation; - Evaluate student’s own non-verbal’s and understand the implications of such to the service users; - Describe and apply a Person-Centered Care Approach in practice; - Analyse the information gathered through the assessment, observation and monitoring to identify the client’s presenting needs and formulate a nursing diagnosis; - Differentiate between the medical diagnosis and the psychiatric diagnosis yet address them holistically; - Formulate a care plan in collaboration with the client, based on short and long-term goals reflective on the client’s own needs and concerns; - Monitor and evaluate for progress or regress of the patient according to the care plan; - Demonstrate the ability to take a history from the client and their relatives/primary carers; - Co-ordinate and collaborate with other Mental health professionals for a complete and thorough assessment; - Demonstrate under supervision a Mental State Examination including appropriate documentation and relevant nursing action; - Measure specific psychiatric symptoms using psychometric rating scales.
