DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to allow the student the opportunity to implement theoretical knowledge within the community mental health clinical setting. All knowledge development in this study-unit is gained by engaging in clinical practice under supervision of ward nurses. Students are expected to complete 60 hours of clinical placements in which they are to practice competencies as outlined within the Acute Mental Health Nursing Student handbook. Students must be able to develop their own learning contract with the unit coordinator and show implementation of both evidence based practice and theoretical materials developed during both the formal teaching and independent study sessions. Experiential development is gauged via a portfolio of work and a clinical assessment. Study-Unit Aims: To provide the student the opportunity to work with patients suffering an acute episode of their mental illness and explore the use of clinical and personal interventions to increase their effectiveness with this patient group. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply the nursing process within the community setting; - Identify barriers limiting effective communication, trust and therapeutic engagement; - Identify the nursing activities associated with community psychiatric nursing; - Describe the psychopharmacological and therapeutic interventions within community psychiatric care; - Describe the difference between the main models of community psychiatric services; - Link the recovery model of care to community psychiatry; - Identify the interactions between statutory MH provision and that of the mental health NGOs; - Identify the various elements of the statutory community mental health services in Malta. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate the ability to conduct a therapeutic conversation; - Analyse the information gathered through the assessment, observation and monitoring to identify the client’s presenting needs and formulate a nursing diagnosis; - Carry out risk assessment and management in the community; - Formulate a community based care plan in collaboration with the client, based on short and long-term goals reflective on the client’s own needs and concerns; - Monitor and evaluate for progress or regress of the patient according to the community care plan; - Co-ordinate and collaborate with other Mental health professionals for a complete and thorough assessment.
