DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to allow the student the opportunity to implement theoretical knowledge within the specialty areas of mental health. These clinical settings include learning disability, substance misuse and child and adolescent. All knowledge development in this study-unit is gained by engaging in clinical practice under supervision of ward nurses. Students are expected to complete 60 hours of clinical placements in which they are to practice competencies as outlined within the Acute Mental Health Nursing Student handbook. Students must be able to develop their own learning contract with the study-unit coordinator and show implementation of both evidence based practice and theoretical materials developed during both the formal teaching and independent study sessions. Experiential development is gauged via a portfolio of work and a clinical assessment.

Study-Unit Aims:

To provide the student the opportunity to work with patients suffering from learning disabilities, substance misuse or conditions related to child and adolescent mental illness and explore the use of clinical and personal interventions to increase their effectiveness with these patient groups.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss about various communication skills required to communicate effectively with speciliasied mental health areas;
- Identify needs and rehabilitation strategies in specilaised mental health care;
- Facilitate the identification of a support network for the patient;
- Communicate and collaborate with other health care professionals and services;
- Demonstrate an understanding of how mental health problems in specialised areas manifest themselves in practice;
- identify the main treatments available for specilaised mental health problems;
- reflect on how the main constituents of the Recovery Model;
- reflect on their own performance in relation to their personal competencies.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the ability to conduct a therapeutic conversation;
- Describe and apply a Person-Centered Care Approach in practice;
- Analyse the information gathered through the assessment, observation and monitoring to identify the client’s presenting needs and formulate a nursing diagnosis;
- Formulate a care plan in collaboration with the client, based on short and long-term goals reflective on the client’s own needs and concerns within the specialised areas of mental health;
- Monitor and evaluate for progress or regress of the patient according to the care plan;
- Demonstrate the ability to take a history from the client and their relatives/primary carers;
- Co-ordinate and collaborate with other Mental health professionals for a complete and thorough assessment;
- Measure specific psychiatric symptoms using psychometric rating scales related to the specialised areas of mental health.
