DESCRIPTION | Each student will be placed in a particular clinical area relevant to their course of studies and be under the supervision of a named mentor. A series of competencies will guide the student through the work that they are required to do and, working with their mentor, they will develop an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, the skills development and the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice. Students will not be expected to function as 'qualified staff' but will learn professional and personal skills under guidance and supervision from both mentors and academic supervisors in an incremental fashion, with each practice module building on the previous ones. Study-Unit Aims: To provide the student with supervised clinical placement, for both skills development and theoretical application to practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Relate the theoretical material from ancillary study units to the clinical placements area; - Compare different clinical settings to establish how forms of mental health nursing vary across them; - Identify where counselling activities can be used most effectively with the patient group with whom they have been placed. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Relate the theoretical constructs from ancillary study units to clinical practice activities; - Identify behavioural cues, through observational skills, to enable them to able to provide patient information to other members of the nursing team; - Undertake a patient assessment and produce a care plan in conjunction with a patient; - To successfully complete the mental health nursing competencies associated with the study unit; - Evaluate their strengths and weaknesses assessment against their progress within the clinical area.
