DESCRIPTION The study-unit will start with an overview of how various ethical theories and concepts might enrich the deliberative process of spatial planning. It will then focus on the role of various stakeholders in this process.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to give an overview of ethical concepts relevant to spatial planning, which spatial planners can employ in their day to day activities as they encounter complex ethical dilemmas.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe key ethical concepts and explain how they enrich the process of decision making in spatial planning;
- Describe the planning process as an ethical endeavour which must be carried out responsibly in all phases of decision making;
- Analyze the role discretion of various stakeholders plays in this process;
- Describe and critically appraise an area of decision making in spatial planning by means of an essay.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use ethical concepts to structure coherent and reasonable arguments in their decision making related to spatial planning;
- Analyze and manage ethical dilemmas in spatial planning in a responsible manner;
- Use their discretion in a positive way in their spatial planning decisions.
