| DESCRIPTION | Globalisation brings a number of challenges to the business community and this study unit will examine the role of government, politics, economics and business in a globalised world. The first part of the study unit will focus on the role of the government in regulating business, including the relationship between compliance and ethics, as well as the ethical challenges of restructuring. Various religious perspectives on business and the ethical principles which emanate from these world views will be presented and discussed. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide students with an overview of the role of government in regulating business in a globalised world, as well as models of corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, business models, and ethical principles in the Jewish, Islamic, Confucian and Buddhist perspectives. Points of convergence between these perspectives and the Christian and 'western' models will be highlighted, and students will be sensitized to other ways of doing business ethically. The study-unit aims to do this while creating a community of active learners and by facilitating a collaborative approach to learning. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - analyze the relationship between law (compliance) and ethics and to develop sensitivity to the ethical dimension of business activity; - analyze various case studies on business behaviour and evaluate the moral implications; - identify and apply Islamic, Jewish, Confucian and Buddhist ethical principles and business models in a globalised world; - describe the inter-playing roles of law, regulation, ethics and business. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - assess and anticipate the practical impact and significance of the need for moral vigilance in business operations and corporate governance in day to day experience; - assess and address the moral dimension of business and the ethical challenges that such activities have presented in the past and will continue to present in the future; - collaborate, with sensitivity and understanding, with Islamic, Jewish, Confucian and Buddhist ways of doing business; - debate within a community of engaged learners, articulating and defending one's position; - engage critically with the different opinions of others.
