DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will focus on the fundamentals and aesthetics of instrumental playing with particular reference to woodwind repertoire. The unit shall be mainly based on practice. Students shall be guided to choose a specific core repertoire to work on during the year which will focus on both solo and ensemble repertoire. Furthermore the student shall work on improving his/her technical skills through specific exercises based on scales and patterns. This unit will serve as the foundation for those who will further proceed to choose their main area of specialization in woodwind playing. Study-unit Aims: The main aim is to provide students with a good knowledge of performance techniques and historical knowledge; to improve general technical capabilities; to work individually and in ensembles, to perform music, and to improve performance criticism. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) attain more technical and historical knowledge about the instrument; b) focus on own sound quality/style and improve it; c) be critical of own musical rendition have the skills to improve performance level; d) identify own mistakes and rectify them. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) choose the repertoire (of circa 20-25mins), prepare it and perform it during a practical examination; b) perform technical studies with fluency (including all Major/Minor, whole tone, chromatic, dominant 7th and diminished 7th scales; c) transpose and play musical excerpts up a tone at sight; d) play fluently across all registers.
