| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides students of French Horn, bassoon, oboe, tuba, and trumpet the possibility to gain more proficiency in their respective instrument. The teaching in this study-unit focuses on two areas: firstly, the acquisition of good playing techniques to play with fluency, and secondly the acquisition of a logical and structured practice routine. Tone production, timing and rhythmic control are fundamental to this unit. The study-unit will help students polish their instrumental technique, timing, tone and control. Coupled with this, the study-unit will also train students to develop an adaptive, professional approach to continuous improvement of their musical skills. Learners will be encouraged to use technical skills creatively and apply them intelligibly to enhance artistic expression. Tuition on other wind instruments apart from the ones mentioned above may be considered on request. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at assisting students to identify and evaluate the most effective and appropriate instrumental techniques in solo and group performances. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) evaluate an effective strategy for a structured practice routine; (b) recognise strategies for improvement; (c) set targets, structures, and review progress. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) demonstrate development in a range of physical motor skills; (b) play with good tempo and rhythmic control; (c) play with good tone production and volume control; (d) show confident physical coordination, fluency, dexterity, and accuracy.
