DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides first-year students with basic knowledge of jazz technique and composition. Students will be given instruction in the structural foundations of different idioms and traditions of jazz music and be given the opportunity to apply these techniques to composing for jazz ensembles. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide students with a basic understanding of the expectations of jazz practice and to give them hands-on experience in composing jazz music. It further aims to provide students with a theoretical grounding in jazz performance that allows them to collaborate effectively in various ensemble settings. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) characterise different styles and idioms of jazz; b) implement jazz techniques into a coherent composition; c) practice performing jazz in an ensemble setting. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) analyse the harmonic structure of different jazz styles; b) explore a variety of applications of jazz techniques in group performance.
