DESCRIPTION | Solfege plays a great part in the development of good hearing, sense of rhythm and musicianship skills in music. Learning solfege contributes to an artistic, expressive and intelligent musical performance. Throughout this study-unit students will develop the necessary skills needed by instrument players to perform music in the right way, with the necessary intonation, especially when playing in an ensemble. The study-unit seeks to provide students with a framework to establish relationships between pitches and facilitate aural training to further develop awareness of the architecture behind a score. This study-unit is focused on the development of musicality and ear training. It also demonstrates a good structured method for disseminating this knowledge in Band Clubs. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to help students develop strong aural and musicianship skills. It should also provide them with the opportunity to employ the most appropriate solfège method when tutoring in band clubs. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) understand the aims of studying solfege; (b) define principal work activities in solfege lessons; (c) establish the needs to develop good ear training; (d) define types of melodic dictation; (e) employ a creative approach to learning solfege. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) identify aurally harmonic and melodic intervals; (b) identify aurally simple rhythmic structures; (c) read proficiently musical notation; (d) identify aurally time signatures and melodic structures; (e) demonstrate a good method for disseminating solfege in Band Clubs.
