DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to give students a defined understanding of principles of compositional techniques and ideas through the study of band marches and concert pieces for band. Students will learn to compose and arrange marches and concert pieces for wind-bands.

Study-unit Aims:

1) The ability to compose and score effectively a traditional band march;
2) The ability to compose extended concert pieces for wind band;
3) The ability to use contemporary styles in wind band composition.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(1) compose traditional band marches in a variety of styles;
(2) compose concert pieces for wind bands;
(3) work with different compositional structures and forms.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) employ clear and well-grounded techniques in composition projects;
(2) demonstrate critical judgment when scoring for band;
(3) experiment with different tone-colours pertaining to the various families within the wind band;
(4) implement nuances of articulation in wind band compositions.
