DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus mainly on improving the clarinet/saxophone student's technical and musical abilities to a high performance level. Clarinet/saxophone students will be guided to work on a core repertoire which will include classical, romantic and 20th century compositions, focusing on both solo and ensemble playing techniques. This study-unit will examine and discuss performance anxieties and coping strategies, improving personal skills for optimal performance and how to obtain better results from practicing.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit provides clarinet/saxophone students with the opportunity to upgrade their musical capabilities in order to succeed as performers.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) recognise the development of the instrument's repertoire;
b) identify major works for his/her instrument and build up an effective and contrasting programme;
c) have the tools to be self-critical, prepare a musically-rendered performance and prepare effective programme notes.

Skills
By the end of the study-unit the students will be able to:

a) identify strengths and weaknesses in his/her musical performance and improve quality;
b) focus on the relevance of historical and stylistic issues in clarinet/saxophone performance.
