DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds up on the knowledge and technique of brass playing attained in a previous unit. Students will continue working on advanced technical aspects of brass playing, suchas double-tonguing, greater flexibility,the extension of range, vibrato and slow and fast air intake. The study-unit will also cover aspects such as the physical properties of the instrument, and the psychology of brass playing including public performance.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
a) improve student’s articulation technique;
b) support students to gain a full tone in all registers;
c) offer students the opportunity to establish dynamic and informed links between theory, technique and interpretation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. recognize the importance of daily practice which is necessary to achieve good brass technique;
b. show an understanding of complex time signatures;
c. demonstrate an understanding of musical phrasing.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. demonstrate good posture and correct breathing;
b. make proper use of the mind and body in brass playing;
c. reinforce through practice the study of music theory.
