DESCRIPTION A systematic survey of 18th, 19th and 20th-century repertoire for solo piano. Analysis and discussions will be followed by listening to representative works. Emphasis will also be placed on historically-informed interpretations of representative works from each historical period.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims to familiarise the student with different techniques of analysing music for solo piano from the standard repertoire. A wide spectrum of composers and styles will be selected and discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) recognise the canonic repertoire for piano solo from the 18th to the early 20th centuries through the analysis of various representative works;
(b) appraise the great piano works of the common practice period.

Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) discuss and analyse piano music from the common practice period;
(b) prepare and deliver a presentation on a composer, genre or topic related to the piano repertoire;
(c) discuss and analyse other works by different composers from other periods and styles.
