DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to follow from and build upon the practical instruction on the art of flute performance from previous years. Lectures will involve presentation of preselected and prepared repertoire and technical requirements as well as research through various media, including (but not limited to) book, recordings, videos and internet research.

Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
a) prepare flute students for a public recital;
b) provide students the opportunity to familiarise with major works for flute of the classical repertoire;
c) support students gain a working understanding of a basic list of orchestral excerpts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• prepare and present a recital of not less than 45 minutes duration (including programme notes);
• be familiar with major works of the classical repertoire, with an emphasis on baroque and classical works;
• have a working understanding of a basic list of orchestral excerpts.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• identify major works for flute, with special emphasis in compositions of the Baroque and Classical period and present them in recital;
• have an improved knowledge of technical aspects of flute performance (vibrato, ornamentation, style and cadenza writing);
• discuss works by major composers in relation to their larger ouevre.
