DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with the opportunity to continue focusing on a high level of characteristic tone colour and technical proficiency. It prepares the musician to properly control the symptoms of nervousness (performance anxiety) before a performance and to maintain sufficient mental and physical control in order play well. Emphasis will also be placed on developing a greater knowledge of brass playing literature and related study books. Students will also be introduced to the technical demands of a number of orchestral excerpts.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
a) help students of brass to establish a systematic approach to develop and maintain fundamental skills through articulation and coordination;
b) enable students to perform with a consistent, refined tone quality across the complete compass and dynamic range;
c) provide students with an opportunity to perform with clarity and flexibility of tonguing over a large rang, incorporating multiple tonguing techniques;
d) teach students coordinate hand and multiple tonguing with ease and control at a variety of tempi;
e) train students of brass instruments create a calm, relaxed and receptive mind set to the practice session using methods such as basic breathing exercises.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. understand the proper approach to professional brass playing;
b. attain new technical knowledge;
c. identify and evaluate conflicting technical issues in brass playing.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. make proper use of double and triple tonguing;
b. play a miscellaneous of avant-garde effects;
c. perform according to style a number of embellishments including trills and shakes.
