DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to follow from and build upon the practical instruction in the art of Flute performance. Practical lessons will involve the presentation of preselected and prepared repertoire and technical requirements as well as research through various media, including (but not limited to) books, recordings, videos and internet research. Aims: The unit aims to provide students with a further understanding of the development of performance skills, initiated in Performance 2: Flute, mainly, by increasing the technical skills, musical prowess and performance ability required to present public performances of a professional quality and duration. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • prepare and present a recital of not less than 60 minutes duration (including programme notes); • be familiar with major works of the classical music repertoire, with an emphasis on Romantic and Modern works; • have a working understanding of and the ability to perform a standard list of orchestral excerpts for flute and piccolo. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • identify major works for flute, with special emphasis on Romantic and Modern works and present them in recital; • have an extensive knowledge of technical aspects of flute performance and be able to incorporate these as part of their practice and performance; • be able to discuss works by major composers, relate them to their larger output and to the compositional style of the day.
