DESCRIPTION This study-unit expands on the technical knowledge attained in previous years. Students will cover a broad range of topics that will also include a thorough understanding of contemporary drumming and general percussion playing, with an emphasis on practical musical application and performance.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to assist students develop an in-depth knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to percussion performance, with emphasis on the solo percussion repertoire and the necessary skills needed for continuous development.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. demonstrate a sound understanding of the thought processes and internalization involved in percussion playing;
b. demonstrate more insight into stylistic interpretation;
c. comprehend theoretical issues related to coordination, independence and inter-independence.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) prepare and perform a well-balanced and varied programme of musical pieces;
b) demonstrate a holistic approach to performance;
c) work independently and solve problems;
d) resolve technical issues;
e) demonstrate a high degree of maturity in percussion playing.
