DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, music performance practices from the baroque, classical and romantic eras will be discussed, making special references to contemporary treatises and historical recordings. Tutorials based on performance practice on the students' principal instruments will also be delivered.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit is intended to introduce students to performance practice applied to different styles and instruments. The lecturer will demonstrate how to apply information found in historical treatises on performance practice to the instrument and repertoire that the students are preparing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to recognise and discuss the connections between the development of musical performance in western musical history and the social and cultural developments that shaped the same development.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to perform pieces from the baroque, classical and romantic repertoire in a historically-informed manner.
