DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to allow students to develop research and tuition alongside Malta's biggest employers in the music world: the national Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Malta Youth Orchestra. It also provides possibilities for independent fieldwork which will allow the students to deepen their knowledge of musical realities both in Malta and abroad. It will stimulate them to approaching the professional musical world and understanding its difficulties and the possibilities it offers, through collaborative work and/or specific tuition.

Study-unit Aims:

(a) provide students with new global perspectives on the complexities that characterise composition, musicological and performance processes, enabling them to approach the practice and study of music in a more knowledgeable way;
(b) acquaint students with international professional standards in their area of focus.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) utilise the mechanics necessary in the design and application phases of a research proposal;
(b) put the proposal to practice and conduct in-depth research on a specific area of studies in musical composition, musicology, and/or performance;
(c) apply material generated from their research to the written assignments for this and other units.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) define the mechanics necessary in the design and application phases of a research proposal;
(b) carry out research using the appropriate research methodologies;
(c) demonstrate critical and analytic skills, in written form, on the topic chosen.
