DESCRIPTION | Students will be guided to investigate in greater depth an area of particular interest, to critically evaluate theoretical perspectives in their chosen area of study and to develop a critical understanding of the main research methods for collecting information. Students will also practice and develop skills in collecting and analysing data, evaluating and comparing existing information and/or undertaking practical work of an advanced or an original nature. They will be required to write their findings in the form of a dissertation that shall be in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Faculty of Science and by the Metamaterials Unit. Study-unit Aims: The aim of the study-unit is to provide an opportunity for the student to demonstrate his/her understanding and application of the knowledge and skills gained throughout the year in research. The main aim of the dissertation is for students to conduct an independent investigation in a particular area of study related to metamaterials, auxetics an other negative materials whilst under supervision. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Identify, with guidance, a research problem which they wish to explore; • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives in their chosen area of study and of the methods used in research; • Analyse and evaluate information that is relevant to the research problem; • Report and discuss the results of their research in a clear, structured and concise form; • Evaluate the strengths and limitations of their research and propose possible further studies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Discuss and write reports regarding their academic research; • Apply subject specific terminology in the correct context; • Use or develop software tools to support research; • Communicate results of research through written and viva-voce examination. ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||||||||
