DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus on developing a thorough understanding of the role and function of the nurse across various contexts, providing the student with a clear overview of the role and scope of the nursing profession today.

The concepts of health, wellness and illness, will be covered in view of addressing the different elements of the nurse-patient relationship, and the multi-faceted aspects of health, wellness and illness.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of this study-unit is to introduce the students to the multifaceted aspects of health and concepts of care delivery with specific thrust on nursing care delivery, which helps an individual with healing and achieving optimum health. This will be achieved through:

- Introducing the nature of care - definitions of nursing according to various nursing theorists; nursing as an art and science;
- Introducing the nursing process and nursing models;
- Introducing Maslow's hierarchy of needs and discussing needs and wants;
- Discussion of concepts of health, wellness and illness;
- Exploring spiritual health and hope;
- Exploring life style and complementary therapies;
- Exploring differences in cultures and how these may effect health, a person's concept of health and nursing care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define nursing;
- Demonstrate knowledge of the centrality of the care in health and wellness;
- Recognize the importance of the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship in nursing;
- Understand various helping skills and their importance in nursing;
- Define health, wellness and illness;
- Discuss different lifestyles, various complementary therapies and reasons why people resort to them in view of health and wellness;
- Discuss differences in cultures and how these effect a person's concept of health and wellness; and
- Define concepts of care and hope.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain how individualized care may be planned in the light of the various theoretical perspectives in nursing;
- Explain the use of a problem solving approach to care;
- Discuss the difference between a person's needs and wants;
- Explain the multifaceted nature of health and appreciate delivery of care accordingly;
- Recognize the importance of cultural competence.
