DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides information on a number of concepts that are considered fundamental to holistic nursing care practice and is the foundation of an unfolding milieu that is specific to nursing. Utilising a supportive self-directed approach, students will be guided to learn about these concepts and understand their influence on enhancing performance and quality of care. Additionally, the concepts will be explored within a 'caring' context and will address the complexities that surround healing and coping.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the foundational concepts essential to effective nursing practice such as: dependency; helplessness; stress; coping; suffering and the alleviation of suffering; and therapeutic use of self amongst others;
- To assist students to understand the relationship between these foundational concepts and the delivery of quality nursing care;
- To encourage a critical approach to the application of the foundational concepts to the nursing process namely, patient assessment, care planning, intervention and evaluation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the foundational concepts that were introduced in the study-unit;
- Explain the relationship between the foundational concepts and the delivery of quality nursing care;
- Identify the main constructs of the foundational concepts and describe their utility throughout the stages of the nursing process.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Utilise the main constructs of the foundational concepts for a holistic care plan through patient assessment, care planning and implementation and evaluation of interventions;
- Acknowledge the contribution that the foundational concepts has on the illness experience and propose strategies to mediate any ill effects in patients, relatives and health care workers.
