DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with the knowledge and skills required to administer first aid in an emergency situation. Through the practical competence-based approach that is adopted throughout the study-unit, students have the opportunity to develop competence and confidence in first aid by engaging with simulated emergency situations in a safe training environment.

The study-unit is designed around the three aims of emergency care, namely to preserve life, to prevent worsening of the condition and to promote recovery; which determine the objectives to be met, as appropriate at this level of first aid and life support.

Topics include:

- Principles of first aid;
- Casualty assessment;
- Unresponsiveness;
- Sudden cardiac arrest;
- Bleeding and shock;
- Serious trauma;
- Sudden acute illness;
- Environmental emergencies;
- Serious incidents, multiple casualty and disaster situations; and
- Minor injuries and illness.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to be able to deal with emergency and life-threatening situations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define an emergency situation, and discuss the provision of first aid in view of the three aims of emergency care;
- Discuss the roles of the first aider in an emergency situation and the chain of help;
- Discuss the development of a clinical emergency with regards to airway, breathing and circulatory compromise;
- Describe the appropriate first aid actions for emergency and life-threatening conditions;
- Describe the appropriate first aid actions for common minor and non-life-threatening injuries and illness; and
- Describe the appropriate actions in a serious incident, an incident involving multiple casualties, or a disaster situation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess an emergency situation quickly and calmly;
- Protect themselves, bystanders and casualties from any danger;
- Assess the condition of all casualties and identify the need for immediate care;
- Administer first aid for life threatening injuries relative to airway, breathing and circulation;
- Administer first aid for serious injuries and sudden acute illness; and
- Administer first aid for common non-life threatening injuries and illness.
