DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will focus on active and healthy ageing with a focus on health promotion, disease prevention and rehabilitation in old age. The initial part of the study-unit will go through local and international policy documents in relation to healthy and active ageing. The challenges in maintaining active/healthy ageing will be highlighted. The second part of the study-unit will focus on specific health promotion strategies and discuss the role of the nurse in promoting these strategies. The final part will go through the concept of rehabilitation in older persons and how a nurse can contribute within a geriatric rehabilitation team. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to assist the student in: - Searching and referring to local and international policies in relation to healthy and active ageing; - Describing some of the challenges in relation to active/healthy ageing and identifying some common solutions; - Identifying and describing health promotion and disease prevention interventions related to older adults and the role of the nurse; - Defining and explaining rehabilitation and geriatric rehabilitation; and - Understanding the role of the nurse in the rehabilitation of older adult. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the meaning of healthy and active ageing; - Describe the role of the nurse in health promotion and disease prevention in older persons; - Comprehend the meaning of rehabilitation and geriatric rehabilitation; and - Describe the role of the nurse in the rehabilitation of older persons. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Work with the geriatric rehabilitation team; - Improve critical thinking and teaching skills to instruct older adults and their caregivers and empowering them to take control of their health; and - Develop rehabilitation skills to improve and maintain optimal physical function.
