DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will focus on the assessment and management of common geriatric syndromes through the use of a comprehensive geriatric assessment. The importance of an interdisciplinary team approach will be highlighted in clinical practice using a biopsychosocial approach. In addition, the unit will provide an overview of the effects of aging on the presentation and course of disease in older people and of common clinical geriatric syndromes such as falls, incontinence, impaired mobility and other common age-associated conditions. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of the study unit is to provide students with an overview of the assessment and management of common geriatric syndromes with a focus on a biopsychosocial approach including impaired mobility, falls, incontinence, pressure sore ulceration and other common age-associated conditions. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical bases of the care of older people; - Develop an appreciation of the effects of ageing on the presentation and course of disease in older people; and - Identify and prevent common clinical geriatric syndromes that occur in the care of older persons. 2.
