DESCRIPTION Dementia has become an important topic in the care of older adults due to the increase in prevalence of the condition especially in this age cohort. Moreover, there has been a change in the way persons with dementia are being cared for with the approaches being developed such as the person-centred care models. This study-unit will provide the students with an overview of these new approaches and how they can be implemented in clinical practice.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to develop an understanding of the impact and management of person centered dementia care within a range of clinical settings.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Examine the theoretical frameworks for classifying, understanding and managing dementia in today's context;
- Discuss the concept of person centered care;
- Discuss the implications of challenging behaviour on the patient, family and service providers;
- Explore the current debates about the use of restraints in dementia care;
- Examine the importance and usefulness of occupation and activity in dementia management strategies.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Assess the level and stage of dementia;
- Manage the nursing needs of a person with dementia;
- Plan the occupation needs of a person with dementia; and
- Evaluate challenging behaviour and the planned management of care in a range of patients.
