DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the didactic and theoretical components required in the helping professions, with its complimentary unit being NUR3305 which focuses on the experiential aspect of Helping Skills.

During the course of this study-unit, students are taught the basic approach to required skills in establishing, maintaining and fulfilling one's competence in helping techniques.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit is intended to invite students to learn the basic skills of helping techniques. Because of its nature, the study-unit requires the student to learn, reflect and practice on the rationale for the techniques, and the mastery usage and proficiency of the skills, in view of different patients and the varied challenging settings one may be working in.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Learn the skills required in professional health care;
- Consider Dr. Clara Hill's 3-stage model in helping skills:
a. Exploration stage,
b. Insight stage,
c. Action stage; and
- Appreciate alternative models to helping skills.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand the nature, reason & practice of helping skills; and
- Practice in class various examples of helping skills.
