DESCRIPTION | This unit draws upon both the related psychiatric nursing units from years 1 and 2 as well as those of theory and practice modules in acute care, child and adolescence, community, forensic and substance misuse. In addition the psychological therapies study units in counselling, psychotherapy and group work will also be adapted by students for their own clinical use. The main activity of the unit is to bring theoretical constructs together in an integrated fashion, highlighting the main differences between mental health and other forms of nursing, the roles associated with a graduate mental health nurse (linked to the graduate MH standards outlined by the Health Department) and the practical application of these within the students' respective clinical areas. These will include risk assessments, nursing process actions, patient inclusion and recovery theory as applied to nursing responsibilities. Topics introduced in previous units will be further developed and evaluated for a broader understanding of their meaning and purpose. Finally, students will be expected to identify personal strategies for implementing this material successfully. Study-unit Aims: The aim of the study-unit is to provide students with information detailing the application of related theoretical knowledge to both the clinical environment and their own personal nursing strategies.
