DESCRIPTION This study-unit prepares the student for the transition to a qualified practitioner by re-visiting those skills that form the pillars of mental health nursing clinical practice; namely the nursing process and skills used in the implementation of its stages. Moreover, a number of additional skills are introduced in order to equip the student with a professional toolkit that is based on the latest evidence in the field. These includes topics such as group therapy, de-escalation, suicide watch and patient advocacy. The sessions involve discussion as well as the practice of skills in a simulated environment. This allows the generation of critique as well as the opportunity to learn by peer observation.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is to:
- Discuss and evaluate principle mental health nursing skills;
- Facilitate the integration of theoretical knowledge with practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the theoretical knowledge underlying principle mental health nursing skills;
- Discuss the evidence base pertaining to these skills;
- Exhibit knowledge about the use of different skills according to patients' needs.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Assess mental health nursing care requirements of patients under their care;
- Prioritise care requirements;
- Select and implement appropriate mental health nursing interventions such as care planning, de-escalation, group therapy, suicide watch, psychoeducation and patient advocacy;
- Develop these skills in order to be able to engage in therapeutic activities;
- Be able to practice these skills in a simulated environment.
