DESCRIPTION | There is increasing evidence that leadership and the management style adopted in the services provided to older adults influence the type of care provided in these settings. This is particularly important within the context of interdisciplinary practice that is widely advocated as fundamental in the care of frail older adults. This study-unit will briefly describe some of the most important leadership skills such as communication skills, decision-making skills, problem-solving and emotional intelligence and their importance in services directed to older adults. Moreover, some of the common leadership styles and how these influence the care practice will be discussed. Finally, an overview of the national minimum standards required of care homes for older people will be given, including suggestions on how nurse leaders can improve these standards in local settings.
