DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will firstly introduce the student to the process of rehabilitation and various theories associated with recovery. Secondly, it will promote practice development through evidence-based and critical reflection. It is designed to cover the key issues, directions, interventions and evidence-based practice related to psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery. The importance of this study-unit is that rehabilitation and recovery impact on the perceived quality of life of the patient and additionally on their families and primary caregivers. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit is designed to: - Develop students' knowledge in the field of rehabilitation and recovery of people with mental illnesses; - Utilize research that will inform evidence based best practice in this specialist area of mental health care. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define the terms Recovery and Rehabilitation; - Describe what is contemporary in the provision of psychiatric rehabilitation; - Differentiate between the terms Clinical Rehabilitation and Disability Support; - Analyze contemporary models of psychiatric rehabilitation; - Explore the nature of recovery in relation to both hospital discharge and community living; - Select processes that enable nursing staff to work collaboratively with patients on both recovery and rehabilitation programmes; - Define adherence to treatment. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Conduct collaborative patient focused assessment; - Plan rehabilitative psychiatric nursing interventions with individuals, family members and communities; - Develop a recovery focused individual rehabilitation package for patients with diverse needs.
