DESCRIPTION | This is a practical study-unit where students are enabled to gain knowledge about elderly care issues through planned placements and experiences in the community. Students will be asked to choose a topic area. They will carry out a needs assessment for the specific client group or in relation to the specific chosen area, and analyse the extent by which such needs are being met through local services. Students will carry out case studies to further help them identify met/unmet needs. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to enable students to understand the needs of the elderly living in the community and how students can devise a plan of interventions by local services to enable their clients in having a better quality of life. Objectives: 1. Knowledge and Understanding At the end of the study-unit, with reference to a specific elderly client group, students will be able to: • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of relevant health issues and their impact on the life experiences of the elderly client; • Gain a better understanding of the local health and social services available for the elderly; • Demonstrate knowledge of the benefits and challenges of community care settings. 2. Skills At the end of the study-unit, with reference to a specific elderly client group, students will be able to: • Identify the bio-psycho-social and spiritual needs of specific groups/ clients and their informal carer/s; • Formulate a care plan based on primary roles of community nurse; • Analyze the extent by which the identified needs are being met through local services; • Participate in and evaluate the services (including nursing services) aimed at meeting these needs.
