Study-Unit Description

CODE NUR5131

TITLE Advanced Nursing Management of Critically Ill Patients

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Nursing

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is primarily intended for graduate nurses who work in critical care areas and who are expected to assess, manage and care for critically ill patients and their relatives. Consequently, it focuses on the care delivered in intensive care units within a framework of multi-disciplinary cooperation and collaboration.

The study-unit will focus on common conditions that require admission to an intensive care unit, their underlying pathophysiology and the various treatment modalities delivered by nurses, independently or in liaison with other health professionals. Its content has been broadly guided by WHO Europe’s Critical Care Nursing Curriculum and the Critical Care National Network Nurse Leads Forum’s (CC3N) National Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in Adult Critical Care Settings. The students will be provided with opportunities to consolidate the knowledge and skills required to competently manage critically ill patients and to address challenges associated with critical care delivery.

The topics covered in this study-unit include the pathophysiology, treatment modalities and nursing care of patients nursed in intensive care units with conditions related to the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, gastro-intestinal, renal and integumentary systems. Infection prevention and control, psychosocial aspects of care, homeostatic maintenance and geriatric and paediatric considerations will also be included.

Study-unit Aims:

- To consolidate students’ knowledge and skills required to provide holistic nursing care to patients admitted to intensive care units and their relatives;
- To enhance students’ awareness of relevant research findings and facilitate their judicious integration into critical care nursing practice;
- To enable students to enhance their involvement in decision making, planning and implementation of treatment modalities for critically ill patients; and
- To encourage students to develop their analytic and critical awareness skills in order to stimulate a dynamic approach to critical care nursing.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of common conditions necessitating intensive care;

- Develop critical thinking skills in order to effectively prioritise management of care;
- Apply principles of infection prevention and control to critical care settings; and
- Appraise research evidence pertinent to the nursing care of critically ill patients and their relatives.
