TITLE Advancing Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing Practice

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Nursing

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is primarily aimed at nurses who work in areas of orthopaedic and trauma care and who are expected to assess and manage, either independently or as part of a team, patients with orthopaedic conditions or traumatic injuries. This study-unit will provide an in-depth understanding of orthopaedic and trauma nursing in relation to a diverse patient population, across a lifespan. This understanding will build on principles of assessment, diagnosis and promotion of musculoskeletal health in the general population.

This study-unit focuses on the principles of care in individuals with musculoskeletal conditions and injuries that originate or are caused by environmental, genetic, infection/immunity, degenerative processes or trauma in primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare systems.

Study-unit Content:

-Clinical musculoskeletal assessment
-The musculoskeletal system and human movement
-A team approach and nursing roles in orthopaedic and trauma care
-Rehabilitation in musculoskeletal injuries and conditions
-Musculoskeletal health promotion
-Key musculoskeletal nursing interventions
-Pain assessment and management
-Complex wound management
-Moving and handling
-Mobility and transfer aids

Study-Unit Aims:

− To consolidate proficiency in orthopaedic assessment of patients presenting with a musculoskeletal injury or conditions
− To provide students with knowledge related to the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system.
− Develop advanced skills in conducting musculoskeletal assessments, including diagnostic techniques and imaging interpretation.
− To explore approaches to pain management in orthopaedic and trauma settings
− To examine rehabilitation strategies and interventions to facilitate optimal recovery and enhance functional independence.
− To discuss ethical and legal issues related to orthopaedic and trauma nursing.
− To integrate principles of musculoskeletal health promotion using preventative strategies
− To develop skills related to moving and handling in orthopaedic and trauma.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

− Demonstrate advanced knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology
− Discuss key aspects of the kinetics of body movement
− Describe the diagnostic tools and imaging modalities pertinent to orthopaedic and trauma nursing such as x-rays, CT, ultrasound and MRI
− Critically discuss the journey of a patient through and orthopaedic and trauma illness
− Identify reserved nursing interventions in orthopaedic and trauma nursing
− Describe pharmacological principles in patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions
− Critically discuss gerontological considerations in orthopaedic and trauma nursing
− Discuss pediatric considerations in orthopaedic and trauma nursing
− Critically discuss ethical and legal issues in orthopaedic and trauma care.
− Critically discuss the multidisciplinary team management of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.
− Describe the different safe moving and handling techniques in individuals with musculoskeletal injuries or conditions.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

− Collect comprehensive data relevant to the patient’s health and situation to support clinical decisions and positively impact the outcomes of individuals with actual or potential musculoskeletal injuries/conditions.
− Conduct a physical musculoskeletal assessment of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.
− Analyse assessment data to determine nursing diagnoses or issues for individuals with actual or potential musculoskeletal injuries/conditions.
− Communicate and discuss assessment findings with the multidisciplinary team.
− Implement multimodal pain management strategies
− Support rehabilitation activities, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
− Design a plan of care for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions
− Develop and deliver patient education interventions to patients and family members
− Apply research findings in clinical-decision-making, integrating latest evidence into daily nursing practice.
− Analyze the impact of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries on society, exploring (social, economic and health care implications)
− Design preventative strategies for the general population about issues such as occupational health and safety, falls prevention and sports injury prevention.
